Magnesium Carbonate – Food Additives

Characters:
Because of the different crystallization conditions, this product can be divided into light and heavy magnesium carbonate. Light magnesium carbonate include: MgCO3·H2O. Heavy magnesium carbonate include: 5MgCO3·Mg(OH)2·3H2O, 5MgCO3·2Mg(OH)2·7H2O, 4MgCO3·Mg(OH)2 and 3Mg(OH)2·4H2O.

Production Method:
1.Deal with magnesite (MgCO2) or dolomite (MgCO3.CaCO3), process to make it.
2.The magnesium sulfate and sodium carbonate precipitation reaction after refining。

Toxicology Basis:
1.GRAS FDA-21 CFR 182, 145.
2.ADI without provisions(FAO/WHO, 1994).

It is usually used as flour treatment agent, anti-caking agents, leavening agents.

1.Matters need attention in use. The product has acid-suppressing effect for stomach, overdose can cause diarrhea.

2.Scope and Usage
(1) China’s <<Food Additives Health Standards>> regulations: Magnesium carbonate can be used for wheat flour, the maximum dosage is 1.5 g/kg.
(2) FAO/WHO (1983) regulations: it can be used as an anti-caking agent milk and cream powder, the maximum amount was 10g / kg and 1g / kg. Moreover it can also used in chocolate, cocoa powder.
