The applications of magnesium hydroxide mainly fall into three categories : one is widely used in environmental protection, neutralizing the acid waste-water, exhaust fume and de-sulfuration, removal of heavy metals from waste-water, decoloration of printing and dyeing waste-water. The second is used as polymer filling and flame retardant, which is only second to aluminum hydroxide. Its decomposition temperature is 340, and very suitable for high processing temperature of polymer PA, PC, PMMA, PP and parts of ABS, PS, PE, EVA, etc. Due to the requirements of manufacturing automobile are smaller diameter wire, cable and the lower volume of the equipment, we often turn to choose magnesium hydroxide as fire retardant. The third is used as raw materials of other magnesium compounds.
Because magnesium hydroxide is belong to middle-strong alkali, and it has a stimulus to eyes, respiratory system and skin. So we should make appropriate protection like wearing gloves or goggles when using it. If contacting with eyes carelessly, please rinse with plenty of water immediately and seek the doctor’s advices.
In 2006, America consumption of magnesium hydroxide is 221 kt/a, from 2006 to 2015 is expected to increase by 5% ~ 6% every year, in which 60% are used in environmental protection, including the governance of 90% waste water pollution and 10% air pollution; 60% of them are used in production of magnesium chemicals; 9% are used in flame retardant; 5% used in paper and pulp; 10% are used in pharmaceutical grade product and others.
